The Right of Way Maintenance Worker is an entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker system. Initially under close supervision incumbents perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the city's infrastructure, parks, streets, and facilities. Our Public Works Department’s goal is to provide and maintain safe streets, sidewalks, trails, and excellent public services. This is an entry level position where you receive skills training (including on site CDL training) and the opportunity for career progression. Hours for this position are typically Monday to Friday 7:00am – 3:30pm. This position is required to respond and participate in snow removal, ice control and other emergency operations during off-duty times. Emergency situations can occur anytime, day or night, seven days per week including holidays. Typical emergency shifts are twelve hours.
Job Responsibilities (Include, but not limited to)
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on public rights-of-way, including streets, sidewalks, curbs, medians, and stormwater drainage systems
- Clear debris, litter, and obstructions from roadways, sidewalks, and storm drains to ensure safety and proper drainage
- Trim trees, shrubs, and vegetation within public rights-of-way to maintain visibility and safety
- Operate and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, skid-steers, and dump trucks
- Install, repair, and maintain street signs, barricades, and other traffic control devices
- Conduct asphalt and concrete patching for minor roadway and sidewalk repairs
- Assist in operating snowplow trucks
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance
- Collaborate with other public works staff and contractors to complete projects efficiently
- Perform “walk-around inspections” of vehicles and reports maintenance as required; may perform minor and routine maintenance
- Performs after-hours, emergency work, and on-call duties as needed
- Regular attendance and punctuality are expected
Minimum Qualifications
No experience is required. High school diploma or GED and the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Ability to train and obtain a class A Driver’s License, with air brake and tanker endorsements within 90 days is required.
Physical Demands
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
Pay & Benefits
Salary rate for this position is $20.54 – $27.73 hourly depending on qualifications.
