Miami County is seeking a qualified attorney to fill a full-time Assistant County Attorney within the County Attorney's Office, depending on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
This position assists the County Attorney in carrying out the duties prescribed by K.S.A. 19-706b. Responsibilities include representing the State of Kansas in criminal prosecutions and court proceedings, representing petitioners in designated matters, providing legal support to law enforcement agencies, responding to major crime scenes, and conducting legal training as needed. The position works under general supervision and exercises independent professional judgment in the performance of assigned duties.
Duties and Responsibilities:- Review law enforcement reports, audio/video evidence, criminal histories, and related documentation to determine appropriate criminal charges and identify additional investigative needs.
- Represent the State of Kansas in felony, misdemeanor, traffic, probation revocation, and other criminal proceedings.
Represent petitioners in juvenile offender, child in need of care (CINC), mental illness, and substance abuse commitment proceedings. - Prepare, review, and file legal motions, pleadings, briefs, search warrants, diversion agreements, and other legal documents.
Conduct legal research and analysis of case law, legislation, and emerging legal issues; prepare appellate briefs and legal opinions as needed. - Prepare for and attend court hearings, trials, and appellate proceedings, including presenting oral arguments before the Kansas Court of Appeals and Kansas Supreme Court when assigned.
- Provide legal advice, guidance, and 24/7 on-call support to law enforcement agencies and other criminal justice partners.
- Respond to major crime scenes and assist law enforcement with investigative and prosecutorial matters.
- Review and evaluate requests related to probation revocations, probation terminations, and diversion programs.
- Monitor assigned cases and incarcerated defendants to ensure timely and effective case management.
- Represent the State and law enforcement agencies in civil forfeiture proceedings.
- Develop and deliver training for law enforcement personnel and other stakeholders.
- Provide presentations and educational programs to civic organizations, nonprofit groups, and the public as assigned.

- Juris doctorate, licensed to practice law in the state of Kansas.
- Two years of experience in the practice of law preferred,
- Prior experience in criminal law as an attorney or an internship preferred.
