The City of Lee’s Summit is seeking a Communications Specialist Intern through an accredited high school program. This internship is designed specifically for high school seniors interested in learning about public safety communications, 911 operations, and emergency services. The intern will support the Communications Unit through administrative tasks, documentation support, and structured observation of dispatch center operations. Interns will interact with civilian and sworn personnel and will gain exposure to the daily operations of a modern 911 communications center in a controlled, age-appropriate capacity. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provides administrative support to the Communications Unit including filing, scanning, document organization, and basic data entry. 2. Assists with general customer service tasks under supervision, such as greeting visitors or answering basic non-emergency questions. 3. Observes call-taking, radio dispatching, and emergency communications workflows under structured guidance from supervisory personnel. 4. Assists with preparations for community outreach materials, educational content, or public information resources. 5. Supports special projects such as research tasks, scheduling-related administrative work, and non-sensitive record organization. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be a current high school senior in good academic standing during the internship. 2. Must be at least 17 years of age at the start of the spring semester internship. 3. Must be able to pass a background check per department requirements. 4. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Interest in public safety, emergency communications, or related fields. 5. A valid state motor vehicle operator’s license is not required unless mandated by the school district.
