The Skilled Laborer supports the Parks and Recreation Department with advanced responsibilities including the operation of heavy equipment, project oversight, and facility maintenance. This role performs complex maintenance and construction duties across city parks, trails, and facilities. The position requires leadership on tasks and safe execution of operations involving landscaping, event setup, and seasonal responsibilities.
Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00 AM-3:30 PM. Some nights and weekends depending on weather.
Essential Job Functions
- Lead or assist in the maintenance of park amenities such as shelters, playgrounds, trails, fountains, sports fields, and restrooms.
- Operate heavy and specialized equipment, including skid steers, backhoes, dump trucks, tractors, and powered hand tools.
- Supervise small project crews and mentor junior laborers in safe and effective work practices.
- Maintain accurate records of projects and inspections.
- Coordinate and execute event setup, including traffic control and logistics.
- Conduct inspections and repairs of park infrastructure.
- Remain on-call for seasonal snow removal or emergency weather response.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in parks maintenance or public works.
- Experience operating heavy equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced proficiency in power tools, equipment, and vehicle operation.
- Knowledge of landscaping, irrigation, turf maintenance, and playground safety.
- Ability to lead work crews and provide clear guidance.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Physical ability to perform demanding outdoor work.
Work Environment
- Outdoor setting with exposure to heat, cold, rain, and uneven terrain.
- Work near mechanical and motorized equipment.
- Some evening, weekend, and overtime hours required.
Physical Abilities
- Ability to lift and move objects of substantial weight.
- Capability to operate heavy equipment safely and effectively.
- Physical endurance to perform manual labor tasks for extended periods.
