Under the direction of the Captain, the Detective is expected to perform comprehensive criminal investigation work; law enforcement and crime prevention work; to enforce State and local laws and ordinances; to train and mentor line officers. The Detective performs field supervision of major crime scenes in addition to carrying out their investigative work and general administrative duties. The Detective may be subject to regular callback, on call, and overtime depending on the nature and frequency of criminal investigations. The incumbent will provide training to department staff on a variety of topics related to criminal investigations. The Detective may be called upon to act as the first line supervisor in the absence of the Captain. This employee must possess excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, supervisory, critical thinking and critical decision making skills, and public relations skills.

Essential Functions
Responds to in progress calls requiring immediate law enforcement assistance.
Conducts criminal and special investigations, including domestic violence, burglaries, thefts, robberies, assaults, homicides and the enforcement of City, County, and State laws.
Prepares case documentation for filing with the District Attorney and presents case evidence in Court as required.
Receives calls from and assists other law enforcement agencies in emergencies or with requests for assistance with investigations.
Coordinates with supervisor on progress and problems concerning assigned cases.
Supervises crime scene investigations.
Maintains records on investigative assignments.
May perform duties in other areas of the Police Department, when called upon to do so.
Assists other Detectives with follow up investigations, and is actively involved in the routine gathering of evidence, questioning of witnesses, apprehension of suspects.
Maintains, facilitates and actively participates in the achievement of the Bonner Springs Police Department Mission, Goals and Values.
Provides information and guidance to the public/victims regarding case status and processes.
May review reports submitted by officers and/or other Detectives to insure completeness.
Conducts in service training and provides input in the performance appraisal process for staff submitting casework to the Investigations Division.
Performs patrol or investigative duties during a specific period in assigned police equipment.
Must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law.
Obey and comply with all City ordinances and policies.
Perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
QualificationsKnowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances, investigative, interview, crime scene search, and law enforcement techniques, computer applications; working knowledge of mathematics; excellent public relations, supervisory, organizational, financial, analytical, verbal and written communication skills. Rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the preservation and presentation of evidence in court. Criminal investigative techniques and procedures, including crime scene investigation, interrogation, fingerprinting and photography. A thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, firearms, law enforcement techniques, computer applications, and a working knowledge of chemicals for drug testing, and mathematics is required. This employee must be able to gather, assemble, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence. Draw logical conclusions from information. Develop and exhaust investigative leads. Demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those involved in case work. The ability to judge distances, to understand and anticipate problems, to enforce federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, and to interpret written instructions, maps, manuals, and reports is required. Must be willing to change shifts as acting supervisor in exigent situations. This employee must have the ability to testify credibly in a court of law. Education and Experience
Three years of law enforcement experience. Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional college level course work and specialized training in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field is highly desirable. An Associate’s degree is highly desirable.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting and lifting and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non weather), exposure to extreme heat (non weather), working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements
State Peace Officer's Standards and Training (KPOST) upon hire.
Valid driver's license.
