STUDENT INTERN – WATER QUALITY
The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) is seeking a creative, organized and enthusiastic individual to serve as a water quality intern.

For more than a decade, MARC has been at the forefront of environmental protection efforts in the Kansas City region. MARC has established innovative planning and policy programs in the air, water, solid waste and emerging energy sectors. Through these programs, MARC works with local governments, the EPA, the respective environmental protection agencies in both Kansas and Missouri and the public to preserve and protect our region’s most valuable natural resources and to ensure that communities and individuals incorporate sustainable practices in both their current and future plans and activities.
ABOUT THIS POSITION
This internship will support two key initiatives — The internship would have two primary focuses 1) Our reach and education for the regional water quality program (including promoting the Mid‑America Green Stormwater Infrastructure Certification Program) and 2) supporting the launch of the new KC Rainkeepers website.
The Water Quality intern may work full time during the summer and up to 20 hours per week during the school year. Daytime scheduling will be flexible with hybrid work available. Interns must have reliable transportation to the MARC offices for in-person meetings. Occasional weekend or evening event work may be required. This internship will span from May through December 2026. There may be an opportunity for the internship to extend into the spring 2026 semester.
What you’ll do
- Assist with project responsibilities such as arranging project meetings and writing meeting summaries.
- Plan and execute regional digital and in-person water quality education and outreach campaigns with support from Water Quality and Public Affairs staff.
- Conduct email, phone and in-person outreach to landscape and restoration companies to encourage enrollment in the Mid-America Green Stormwater Infrastructure Certification Program
- Assist in the planning and hosting of multiple stormwater-related training events
- Support development of a riparian restoration best practice manual for the Kansas City region.
ABOUT YOU
Skills you’ll need
- Marketing campaign planning and writing skills.
- Ability to learn organization-specific marketing and contact management software
- Strong oral and written communications skills, including excellent grammar and spelling.
- Ability to manage multiple projects under deadline.
Basic requirements
- Current student or recent graduate (past six months) of a bachelor’s or master’s level program.
- Education or past work experience in urban planning, environment, communications or a related field.
- Valid driver’s license.
Additional qualifications
Your resume will stand out if you also have:
- Experience in environmental studies.
- Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills to effectively interact with internal staff, governmental bodies, private companies, general public, and outside organizations.
- Ability to research, integrate, analyze and interpret data from various sources to produce information and reports.
- Strong computer skills using spreadsheets and word processing software.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Internships are classified as hourly positions with no benefits and will be paid at the rate of $18/hour for undergraduates and $20 for graduate students. MARC offers an attractive team-oriented work environment.
