TRANSPORTATION PLANNER I
The Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Transportation Planner I. The planner will provide support and assistance for developing regional plans, policies, programs, and related projects. This role supports regional transport planning activities, regional performance measurement programs, travel demand modeling, funds programming activities, among other tasks. The Transportation Planner I provides support for engaging local officials, other stakeholders, and the public in integrating regional transportation and environment planning initiatives, both with each other, and with local government and statewide plans. This position is responsible for communication and coordination with regional committees and engagement with local officials, other stakeholders, and the public.

ABOUT THIS POSITION
This is a full- time professional position. MARC prepares a long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan every five years, including elements for all modes of travel, a Transportation Improvement Program every two years allocating federal funds to projects, and other metropolitan planning products. The Transportation Department establishes priorities, guides investments, and supports coordinated operations to implement the region’s long-range plan for a safe, balanced, and equitable transportation system. We advance the region’s vision for quality places, focusing development and redevelopment.
This position will help support MARC’s Transportation & Environment Department’s engagement and outreach efforts and will support a variety of MARC’s forums to engage with the regional stakeholders. Additionally, the position will support a variety of regional planning initiatives, including the Planning Sustainable Places program, FHWA Programming Activities, Environmental Planning Work, and other similar activities.
What you’ll do
- Supports the development and implementation of the metropolitan transportation plan.
- Compile and present data on various aspects of transportation planning using a variety of computer software including databases, spreadsheets, geographic information systems, graphics, and statistical software.
- Support a variety of MARC’s forums to engage with the regional community on topics ranging from bicycle/pedestrian, transit, freight, economic development, aviation and general planning issues.
- Support the Planning Sustainable Places program, FHWA Programming Activities, Environmental Planning Work, and other similar activities.
- This position may manage special projects and studies and is responsible for communication and coordination with internal MARC staff, external stakeholders, and vendors.
ABOUT YOU
Skills you’ll need
- Knowledge of transportation planning principles and practices, and strong project management skills.
- The ability to be effective working with diverse constituencies, including local government officials, internal and external boards, committees, and the public.
- Strong attention to detail, ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously,
- Excellent oral, written communication and public speaking skills, and experience with communicating regional land use, transportation and environmental planning concepts.
- Skills in operating computer programs using spreadsheets, databases, word processing, geographic information systems, and other similar programs.
- Skills in interpreting complex graphic and/or computer output related to the metropolitan planning process.
Basic requirements
Any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience may be considered to meet minimum qualifications.
- Bachelor's degree in transportation, planning, regional planning, geography, or closely related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Prior experience working in a non-profit environment preferred.
- Prior experience working with ArcGIS, ESRI or other planning/transportation related software required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
MARC offers an attractive team-oriented work environment along with a competitive fringe benefit package. MARC offers employees the flexibility to work remotely for up to two days per work week. This is a nonexempt position, with a starting salary from $45,500 to $58,000 Per year, depending on qualifications.
