Job Description:
The Public Works Street Division is seeking a General Laborer to join the team. This position plays a vital role in maintaining safe and reliable streets throughout the community.
The General Laborer performs a variety of manual labor and equipment operation duties, including road and culvert repairs, winter weather operations, sign repair and replacement, traffic control setup, and emergency storm response. This is a great opportunity for a dependable and hardworking individual who enjoys hands-on outdoor work and contributing to the upkeep of our city’s infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
Operates dump trucks, weed eaters, chainsaws, and other hand tools to support street maintenance tasks.
Assists in the repair of roads, culverts, and related infrastructure.
Supports winter weather operations, including snow and ice removal.
Assists with traffic sign repair and replacement.
Sets up and removes barricades, cones, and warning signs at designated locations for work zones and emergencies.
Participates in emergency storm operations, including debris removal and roadway clearing.
Performs other duties as assigned to maintain the safety and function of public streets.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of this position. Must possess a valid Driver’s License and automobile insurance; CDL preferred at the time of application or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. Knowledge of Kansas City, KS streets is preferred. Ability to operate a two-way radio and follow oral and written instructions. Capable of standing, sitting, or walking for extended periods and performing physical labor, including lifting, carrying, or dragging objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to analyze work conditions, recognize safety hazards, and respond appropriately to ensure a safe work environment. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team in a variety of weather and field conditions, often with exposure to noise.
Salary Range:
$22.05/hr.
