The part-time Fleet Technician will perform routine maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on City vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. Work is usually performed under direct supervision, but routine activities are often carried out independently. The majority of the work will focus on preventative maintenance, basic diagnostics, and standard repair tasks. Interaction is direct with public works staff, other department personnel, and occasional external contacts. Steel Toe Boots, Jeans, Work shirts, and all Personal Protective Equipment is provided by the City. The starting pay for this position begins at $16/hr (DOQ).
Position Responsibilities
Vehicle Maintenance. Performs maintenance, inspections, diagnosis and repairs on all types of motorized vehicles, including tractors, automobiles, trucks, backhoes, loaders and other vehicles and equipment powered by gasoline or diesel engines. Tasks include oil changes, mounting tires, turning routers, working on brakes, checking electrical wires and hydraulic hoses, and replacement of light bulbs, batteries, and spark plugs. Washes vehicles and equipment.
Vehicle and Equipment Operation. Loads and unloads materials and equipment from trucks and trailers. Occasionally drives truck to haul materials and transport equipment to project locations.
Shop Maintenance. Performs general maintenance, cleaning, and organizing of the shop area. Ensures tools, equipment, and work areas are maintained in a safe and orderly condition. Follows established safety protocols, policies, and regulations. Identifies and reports workplace hazards.
Purchasing and Inventory. Maintains up to date inventory of materials and supplies. Purchases authorized tools, equipment, and materials in accordance with City policies and procedures.
Emergency Operations. Performs immediate equipment and vehicle repairs on damaged or malfunctioning equipment during emergency operations. Drives truck during snow removal and ice control operations as needed.
Communication. Listens to and receives calls on the radio and phone to receive assignments.
Other Duties. Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or the equivalent is required
- Previous experience in the maintenance and repair of automobiles and construction equipment is preferred
Work Schedule
This part-time position can only work a maximum of 1,000 hours per year. Regular shifts are between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position may require off-duty hours for snow and ice removal, ice control operations, and other emergency situations.
