Under the leadership of the Director of Human Resources, the Safety and Wellness HR Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring citywide safety and wellness programs to foster a safe, healthy, and productive workforce, ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and supporting risk management initiatives. The midpoint of the salary range for this role is $75,055, with actual pay based on experience, education, and skills. The ideal candidate will work closely with the third-party administrator to manage the city’s workers’ compensation program, as well as assess and identify workplace hazards and safety training requirements for each city position. The ideal candidate will administer and oversee the City’s U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse program for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders, ensuring full compliance with all applicable federal regulations and related state requirements. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of human resource principles and practices, with specific expertise in workers’ compensation administration, wellness programming, and employee engagement initiatives. Advanced experience managing workers’ compensation claims is required, including claim investigation, coordination with third-party administrators, return-to-work programs, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with legal counsel on complex or litigated claims. Knowledge is typically acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree in human resources management, occupational safety, public administration, or a related field, along with a minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible professional experience in human resources. Experience working in a unionized environment is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong analytical and organizational abilities, and the demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across all levels of the organization.
